Global warming?… Chile hit with worst cold spell in 80 years
Anyone looking to get some delicious Chilean fruit this winter is
going to be disappointed, as the worst frost in more than 80 years has
damaged 50 million boxes of fruit exports — causing the country to
declare a state of emergency in its agricultural sector.
The Chilean Fresh Fruit Exporters Association said that freezing temperatures throughout mid-September hit the country’s fruit growers with the coldest frost since 1929. Temperatures fell to an average of 19 degrees Fahrenheit for an average of seven hours in several of the Chile’s growing regions, contributing to a huge drop-off in fruit exports.
Chilean growers exported about 282 million boxes of fruit last year,
and experts believe that exports will fall short of that by about 50
million boxes for this year. However, when production increases are
taken into account, the total frost damage to fruit production could be
closer to 60 million or 65 million boxes.
The wine industry was hit hard by the frost as well.
Estimates put the total damage to Chilean crops at $1 billion. Reuters reports that between 35 percent and 61 percent of stone fruit crops were damaged, 57 percent of almonds, 48 percent of kiwis and 20 percent of grapes. The U.S. imports about 42 percent of the country’s grapes.
“These frosts are the worst that agriculture has faced in 84 years, impacting the area from Coquimbo to Bio Bio,” the National Agricultural Society said.
Because of the lost production, fruit prices are expected to rise.
“All throughout November, December and January, prices of peaches, nectarines and plums will be higher because there will be shortages,” said Cristián Allendes, president of the Federation Fruit Producers. ”There will be half the volume of a normal year, so it is impossible for them to cost the same.”
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared September 2013 to have tied with September 2003 as the fourth warmest on record. Global surface and oceanic temperatures were 1.15 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th century average for that month.
However, September also brought with it record levels of arctic sea-ice coverage — only six years after the BBC reported that global warming would leave eliminate arctic sea ice by 2013.
Antarctica also experienced record levels of sea ice in September, with 7.51 million square miles surrounding the continent. This beat out the previous sea-ice coverage record, set in 2012.

McDonald’s helpline to employee: Go on food stamps
The protest movement for higher wages for fast food
workers has been simmering for several months now, in the form of
employee walkouts and street rallies in several major US cities. Now,
advocates have zeroed in on another group they say is suffering
financially from fast food chains’ corporate stinginess: the American taxpayer.
The charge is that McDonald’s and other fast food
giants who pay their workers less than what many consider a "living
wage" are letting taxpayers pick up the slack in the form of public
assistance. A video released Wednesday by the labor advocacy group Low Pay is Not Ok drives the point home. In it, Nancy Salgado, a 10-year McDonald’s employee in Chicago
and a mother of two, calls a worker helpline called McResources,
purportedly set up to help employees with financial issues. During the
call, which the group recorded and edited, the operator suggests that
Ms. Salgado apply for food stamps and Medicaid, giving her numbers in the Chicago area to call.
“McDonald’s doesn’t want to pay its workers more. It wants you to pay its workers more,” text at the end of the video read.
McDonald’s refuted the video’s
contents in a statement Wednesday, calling it “not an accurate
portrayal of the resource line,” and “very obviously” edited. But the
full 14-minute call was made available to reporters, and while the
operator did tell Salgado that her franchise hadn’t signed up for full
McResource services, she did give her the information that the edited
video claims.
What’s more, the unedited call
does nothing to refute the concept of fast food chains underpaying
their workers as a hefty public burden, a notion that is gathering steam
with a small but growing number of advocacy groups, economists, and
policymakers.

The video’s release comes a week after economists at the University of California Berkeley and the University of Illinois released a study finding that fast food workers in the US
draw nearly $7 billion annually in taxpayer-funded federal aid, in the
form of food stamps ($1 billion), Medicaid ($3.9 billion), and earned income tax
credits ($1.9 billion). More than half of the 1.8 million “core” fast
food workers who work at least 11 hours per week and 28 percent of those
who work full time rely on some form of public assistance, according to
the study.
“Low wages
paid by employers in the fast-food industry create especially acute
problems for the families of workers in this industry,” the study’s
introduction reads. “Median pay for core front-line fast-food jobs is
$8.69 an hour, with many jobs paying at or near the minimum wage.
Benefits are also scarce … and many of the families of fast-food
workers must rely on taxpayer-funded safety net programs to make ends
meet.”
The
fight to improve the lot of low-wage workers in both the food service
and retail sector has been chugging along since at least last year, when
a group of Wal-Mart workers threatened to strike on Black Friday,
the biggest shopping day of the year. Some workers at McDonald’s,
Wendy’s, and other major fast food chains went on strike in late August,
demanding health benefits and a living wage.
Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts has even taken up the issue of fair worker, arguing in a March Senate hearing that it would only cost McDonalds four cents more per meal to provide a $10.10 minimum wage to all of its workers.
But
the focus on the tax aspect of the inequity is new, and it’s a shift
with the potential to give this particular protest movement staying
power, argues David S. Meyer, a professor of sociology and political science at the University of California in Irvine
who studies large protest movements. Still, he doubts that it would be
enough to affect a policy change on its own. “Are the people who are not
making enough money at McDonald’s enough to support a political
campaign? Probably not. That’s certainly not there,” he says.
Another issue: McDonald's
didn’t become the biggest restaurant chain in the world without a
successful business model. “It exists to sell food cheap,” Meyer points
out. “And if you pay people $15 an hour, it won’t be as cheap. And they
would be crazy to pay people much more than their competitors.”
For the movement to affect
change, he argues it would have to strike a chord with a powerful enough
group of people, or capitalize on the right news story. “The
antinuclear movement hung around for years, and then Three Mile Island
happened and made the whole thing bigger,” he says. “It just takes the
right opportunity.”

Health insurance cancellation notices soar above Obamacare enrollment rates
Hundreds of thousands of Americans who purchase their own health
insurance have received cancellation notices since August because the
plans do not meet Obamacare’s requirements.
The number of cancellation notices greatly exceed the number of Obamacare enrollees.
Insurance carrier Florida Blue sent out 300,000 cancellation notices,
or 80 percent of the entire state’s individual coverage policies, Kaiser Health News reports. California’s
Kaiser Permanente canceled 160,000 plans — half of its insurance plans
in the state — while Blue Shield of California sent 119,000 notices in
mid-September alone.
Two major insurance carriers in Pennsylvania, Insurance Highmark in Pittsburgh and Independence Blue Cross in Philadelphia plan to cancel 20 percent and 45 percent of their total plans, respectively.
Nearly 800,000 New Jersey residents’ health-care plans will not longer exist in 2014, forcing insurers to create new ones for individuals and small business owners that hew to the Obamacare’s new regulations, The New Jersey Star Ledger found in early October.
“I don’t feel like I need to change, but I have to,” Jeff Learned, a television editor in Los Angeles, told Kaiser Health News. Learned now needs to scramble to find a plan to coverage his teenage daughter, whose health problems have required several surgeries.
More Americans have lost their individual health coverage in Florida and California than have gotten past the login screen on HealthCare.gov, according to The Washington Post, which reports that 476,000 applications have “been started,” but not completed. But it’s difficult to determine exactly how lopsided the rates of cancellations versus the rates of enrollment are — the Obama administration jealously guards the official enrollment numbers, refusing to release them to even the law’s loyal Democratic supporters.
“It’s screwed up,” New York Rep. Charlie Rangel said of the White House’s secretive maneuvers.
Several states have released Obamacare enrollment data, however, revealing extremely low rates. South Dakota reported that only 23 people enrolled in the exchanges, a mere 0.0000276 percent of that state’s population. North Dakota enrolled only 20 residents.
Alaska, meanwhile, comes in at seven total enrollees, or 0.000957 percent of Alaskans.
Sources inside the Department of Health and Human Services told The Daily Mail that only 6,200 Americans signed up for coverage the day HealthCare.gov launched, while only 51,000 applied in the first week. (RELATED: Obama administration will not release number of Obamacare enrollees on opening day)
During his campaign to pitch the law to voters back in 2009, President Barack Obama vowed that Obamacare would merely lower costs for Americans with health insurance while providing coverage to the uninsured.
“[N]o matter how we reform health care, we will keep this promise to
the American people: If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep
your doctor, period,” Obama said to an audience at the annual conference
of the American Medical Association. “If you like your health care
plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan, period. No one will
take it away, no matter what.”
“Again, [the Affordable Care Act] is for people who aren’t happy with their current plan. If you like what you’re getting, keep it. Nobody is forcing you to shift,” he later added.
