Radioactive products pulled from Bed, Bath and Beyond

NEW YORK (AP) — Metal tissue holders contaminated with low levels of radioactive material may have been distributed to Bed, Bath & Beyond stores in more than 20 states including New York, federal regulators said Thursday.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman David McIntyre said the home products company had pulled the tissue holder from its stores.

According to reports, the tissue holders in question are made with manmade cobalt-60, a synthetic radioactive isotope of cobalt. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists cobalt-60 as a cancer-causing material because it emits "powerful gamma rays" of ionizing radiation that are known to cause cancer. The agency also indicates that cobalt-60 is a "significant threat" to health.  SEE HERE
